Summary

The primary goal of the project was to create an app that helped users shop smarter according to their dietary restrictions. We created an app that allowed users to create a personal shopping profile that included any allergies or diet restrictions or health goals. The profile was then saved in the app. When customers wondered if a product fit into their diet all they had to do was scan the barcode on the product or search for it in the search bar and a rating would pop up whether or not the food fit their diet or not. This app was designed to be a usable tool while actively grocery shopping as  well leading user’s to make better decisions when shopping instead of having buyer’s remorse later.

We used a Google Survey that we posted on social media

to get the most diverse group of user’s and demographics.

We wanted to know who our target audience was and this

survey helped us define that.

38 surveyed ~ 6 interviewed

We found our target audience to be female with an average age of 28.

Interview Takeaways

Some key takeaways that we learned from our user interviews were:

Quality and dietary restrictions are most important for the average potential user

Most users wish companies would be more conscientious about what they put in foods. They often check labels to see what it contains.

Constant price inflation frustrates primary household shoppers. They often purchase cheaper options.

Most primary shoppers dread the experience, finding it an exhausting necessity

We found that children are often the driving factor that makes shoppers more conscious of what they are purchasing

User Persona

Based on our user research we created the user persona, Stacy Anderson. Stacy is our ideal user and main demographic.

User Scenario

Who is our user and why might they need the Honest Eats app?

Here we take a look at a possible scenario in which Stacy (our user) becomes introduced to the app Honest Eats.

The Problem

American shoppers often have a hard time selecting foods that provide nutritional value and fit their diet. Honest Eats targets these problems, giving users both nutritional ratings and alternative recommendations that fit their diet.

Based on our user research, we determined the features that provide the largest impact to our users. We used the I like, I wish, What if, method to achieve this.

We knew our app must include a barcode scanner, product ratings, in-store product locations, and dietary restrictions. A couple features that we wanted to include were, price comparisons between stores and real-time prices at your store locations but we ran out of time to figure out how to add those features..

User Flows

After defining what the key features of our app would be we created user flows based on and how our user, Stacy, would use the app.

Product screen after searching for a specified product.

Product rating after scanning barcode.

Ideate & Prototype

We created user flows to show how Stacy would use the app. We then started sketching the different screens that we thought we would need for our app and how we thought the app would flow and how those key features would work. You can see below a couple of the screens I created and how they went from early sketches to Hifi screens.

Wireframes

After creating all our screens and prototyping our app we moved on to some guerrilla testing. We tested 7 users, 4 tasks where all users were able to complete all tasks except the fourth task, creating a profile. So we added an "edit" button to the profile screen.

Guerilla Testing

After changing this last detail we were finally finished with our Honest Eats app. You can move through the app below and test it for yourself.

Prototype

Creating this app was such a vital experience through my UX learning journey. I learned a lot about the retail aspect of UX design, there's a lot that goes into it that you don't even think about. Looking back, there are some things I would change about our app but I think at the time we created it we were still very new to UX design and did a really good job for our second in class project. Overall, I'm proud of the app we created.
